
Gator women's hoop team racks up impressive win over FSC, 59-48
Farmingdale, NY –The Sage Colleges' women's basketball team posted the program's first win over Farmingdale State College on Wednesday night in a key road Skyline Conference match-up. Sage tallied a 59-48 win to opened the 2013 half of the season on Monday with the Gators' first contest of 2013. Sage's win streak has grown to six games and is now 6-5 overall with a 3-1 mark in league play. FSC drops to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the Skyline Conference.
FSC held a 26-22 lead at the break before the Gators made a late-game rally in the final five minutes of play. Rookie Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central) added a layup at 6:28 to take a 46-45 lead. Sophomore Megan Bowman (Saranac, NY/Saranac) hit a jumper followed by three straight three point baskets by junior guard Erica Houle (Latham, NY/Shaker) helped the Gators make a significant run. Sage held a 10-point lead (57-47with 3:37 left to play).
Houle led the Gators with her second straight 18-point performance, while Tironi also connected for a career-high as she tallied 14 points. Sophomore guard Lea McClain (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) tallied 10 points as the Gators racked up 10 three-point baskets. The 10 three-point baskets in a game is tied for No. 2 in a Sage single game effort, a feat Sage has not achieved on three separate occasions.
Sophomore forward Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) had 12 rebounds with five points and tied her season-best with three blocks on the night.
FSC was held to a 22.6% shooting effort on the night as they made just 17 of 76 shots attempted. Nicky Young led the Rams with her 17 points, while Nikita Green had 12 points with eight rebounds, four assists and six steals in the setback.
The Gators will be back in action January 12 when they visit Purchase College for a 1 p.m. for a Skyline Conference game.
